TPE 8: Learning About Students

Learning About Students

Supplementary Video:

This is a video I used during a Social Studies lesson as part of my Student Teaching. It really helped me to start the conversation in my classroom about communities, and set the tone of multicultural inclusion within my classroom.

Lesson Plan: Third Grade Social Studies

In this lesson plan developed during my Student Teaching assignment, students shared with the class about the communities they belong to. It surprised some students to find out that they had more in common than they thought. This lesson gave me great insight and appreciation of students' cultures and communities, and indicated some cultural assets they bring with them to school.

Case Study: Annie

Annie is a fictional fifth grade student who is struggling in her Language Arts class. In this case study, I present my observations from the information given about Annie, and apply the methodology covered in Educational Psychology: Theory and Practice, by Slavin.

Field Experience: Interviewing a Resource Teacher

I traveled to a local middle school and sat down with the Resource Teacher for the site. I asked her how she addresses the needs of her students, and she gave me some great insight about first beginning by learning about students, and trying to put myself in their shoes. Here's the interview, as well as my following reflection.

Speech/Language Impairment Matrix

One of the resources I developed to assist my learning about students is a matrix. I might use this in the classroom to ascertain if a student needs support in the general education classroom. This matrix is ongoing, and will be added to/updated as I gain more experience and work with other education professionals, such as School Psychologists and Special Education teachers.
