Dear My Future Superintendent, Chairpersons, and the Ladies and Gentlemen of The Board of Trustees:
I am writing you this letter from My Future School to first congratulate and thank you for your collective leadership in securing the Department of Education Enhancing Education Through Technology Grant. As a teacher at My Future School, I cannot express how excited I am to be a part of the team that will be allowed to serve our school through the expansion and development made possible by this award. Like many teachers, I have immediate experience with the current equipment available in our classrooms, including the district-wide goal and standard of providing a learning tablet for each child. I have seen how these tablets have revolutionized the way children are learning in classrooms, even when I was substitute teaching and did not yet have a classroom of my own. My enclosed proposal will show how My Future School can turn the opportunities created by the learning tablets into an educational investment that could result in real, measurable learning gains for years to come.
The instructional software I propose for our classroom includes Nearpod, Speakaboos, and Splash Math. Nearpod would bring my lessons directly in front of students via their personal learning tablets, where students can see the information simultaneously and answer questions in real time. This eliminates concerns over whether or not students are able to see or strain to focus. Software like Nearpod would enhance my lessons in basic sentence structure through learning activities where sentences reveal one word at a time for students to copy writing, Speakaboos, a literacy software, would make it possible for my students to work in small groups, receiving engaging and fun reading instruction, and giving me a better opportunity to work with struggling readers. Finally, Splash Math turns math concepts into a game, and students can quiz and race each other via their tablets to complete math problems in ways that are lively and fun, while also learning the math concepts that will keep them up-to-date with state standards.

I am confident that exploration of these proposed items will reveal benefits as follows:
For Students:
For teachers:
  • Empowered Learners:
Students have empowered and direct access to interact with lessons (nearpod),
    to build group networks (speakaboos),
to use technology to assess themselves and to know when to ask questions (splash math), encouraged to explore and troubleshoot current technologies (all programs)

  • Digital Citizens:
the classroom setting of the digital interaction allows students to explore their identity as digital students,
as well as to treat others with dignity and respect (all programs)

  • knowledge constructors: Students are able to practice contributing to class discussion (nearpod) and
learn to make meaning of the concepts discussed in class.

  • As Learner: Nearpod makes evaluated lessons available for access, ensuring learning of the most current and research-based delivery of lessons.
  • As Leader: Splash Math centers learning standards around engagement and exploration, making it low-risk for students to become stakeholders in their own educations
  • As Citizen: The use of Adobe development tools allows promotion of a culture that encourages curiosity and growth.
  • As Collaborator: The use of Adobe tools and Microsoft Office suite creates opportunities to generate specific learning-oriented worksheets and assignment sheets to collaborate with district members as well as students about the class’s specific learning needs
  • As Designer: Corel Draw uses technology to create instructional presentation styles in new and exciting ways to further engage and encourage students.
  • As Facilitator: Planbook allows the organization of proper lesson planning, which works synergistically with instructional software—can ensure students receive consistent instruction even in times of teacher training or absence management.
  • As Analyst: Planbook and Adobe create databases for entering in assignment results to compare with lesson plan delivery, can be used to improve lesson planning and materials.

The inclusion of these programs as additions to our district standard of learning tablets would not only make the difference for current students in first grade here at My Future School, but I have designed it so that this office could also use it to propel our district goals and dreams. Please note that the enclosed budget* allows access individually for each student. However, if the district decided to revolutionize the way math and literacy are taught to students long-term, it is possible with this budget to share these programs within the classroom, and pay for an instructional standard—and all the benefits therein—for the next three years. In this way, the district could analyze results from this combined approach and design our next phase of education to be launched in 2021. I am confident that it is clear by now that whichever course of direction this office takes, it will provide an investment that will benefit the students in first grade at My Future School, and will put them and their future teachers that much farther ahead in the realms of math and literacy.

With Respect,
