Interpretation and Use of Assessments
An analysis of raw data to determine student strengths and weaknesses from a Grade 5 Summative mathematics assessment
This analysis follows my research on the relationship between meaningful instruction and students' directly-resulting performance on assessments. I learned how to analyze student strengths and weaknesses based upon what I learned from observing math instruction in two different elementary classrooms, as well as evaluating a sample data set which contained student work. I examined student work to uncover patterns and similar strategies, which exposed common mistakes as well as common strengths.
This assessment was developed after a lesson I delivered about hyperbole. In order to develop learners with a growth mindset, I have included a portion for students to write more information. If students do not know about hyperbole, for example, this portion allows them to write what they do know. I have also included a rubric to provide mastery-oriented feedback.
Sample Assessment: Equations
This is an assessment I developed after delivering a lesson about equations to a third grade class during my Student Teaching assignment. In order to develop learners with a growth mindset, I have included a portion for students to identify tools and resources they can use to extend or improve their understanding of equations.
