TPE 1 and 1A: Subject-Specific Pedagogical Skills for Multiple Subject Teaching Assignments

Specific and Subject-Specific Pedagogical Skills for Subject Matter Instruction

Teaching English-Language Arts in a Multiple Subject Assignment

Lesson Plan: Kindergarten Reading/Language Arts

This lesson plan is for fact-to-face instruction within a kindergarten classroom. I have designed this lesson to address Common Core standards. This lesson plan also outlines my proposal for differentiated instruction in order to address the needs of all types of learners.

Lesson Plan: Third Grade Language Arts

This lesson plan is for instruction on suffixes in a third grade classroom. I have designed this lesson to address Common Core standards. This lesson plan outlines my proposal for differentiated instruction in order to address the needs of all types of learners.

Case Study: Dominique

This link contains my approach toward a case study concerning a 6-year old female student named Dominique. This student was given reading and writing samples. I recorded Dominique's miscues as well as her approach toward reading while completing a running record. In this study, I recorded common errors I saw, made learning goals for this student, and identified ways to tailor instruction in order to meet her learning needs.

Case Study: Ryan

During the course of my field experience, I sat with a 7-year old male student named Ryan. This student was given a text from the classroom library to read to me. I recorded Ryan's miscues as well as his approach toward reading after completing a running record.

Teaching Mathematics in a Multiple Subject Assignment

Lesson Plan: Mathematics

Here is my proposal for a second grade unit plan of study in mathematics. This unit contains a lesson plan with which to build fluency and experience in base-ten numbers. This lesson utilizes a conceptual approach. My aim is to engage and inspire students in this lesson by appealing to all five senses as much as possible in order to facilitate a conceptual understanding of math problems. I have also included considerations in order to differentiate instruction for the benefit of different types of learners. Please note that I have referred to “high achieving” and “low achieving” students as students with “high proficiency” and “low proficiency” as they may relate to this lesson.

Teaching Science in a Multiple Subject Assignment

Literature Review and Reflection

Here is a literature review which inspired reflection on methodologies for teaching science in a Multiple Subject assignment. I found a direct relationship with the frameworks for science and with the teaching strategies of conceptual understanding. I discovered this relationship was also connected to skills within the classroom of communication; specifically collaborative learning. I noticed that in science, classrooms which utilized collaborative learning for the purposes of language development in scientific discussions found benefits for students within the realm of conceptual understanding.

Teaching History-Social Science in a Multiple Subject Assignment

Lesson Plan: Science

This lesson uses the California Frameworks Content Standards 2 in the category of kindergarten science. I outlined how using Web tools in the kindergarten classroom can help give students access to conceptual understanding of their own emotions, using inquiry-based thinking.
